Overview:

This literature review examines how urban and suburban neighborhood built environments influence outdoor free play (OFP) for young children under the age of six. Drawing on 53 studies conducted across 17 countries, the review highlights that children growing up in urban settings often face limited opportunities for outdoor, child-directed play.  While parks and playgrounds close to home encourage play, long distances and high-traffic streets present significant barriers. Importantly, the review also reveals children’s adaptability, as they often perceive a wide range of spaces as playable and creatively engage with informal environments. Overall, the review suggests the heightened importance of thoughtfully designed play spaces in schools in urban neighborhoods in particular. These spaces should prioritize accessible, safe, and inclusive outdoor spaces to support young children’s healthy development through free play.

Key Insights:

  1. Urban neighborhoods often lack spaces for outdoor free play that are safe and accessible.
  2. Children exercise a lot of creativity in creating play spaces where none are designed, but thoughtful planning can enhance their development.
